C Peptide

The C-Peptide test determines how much C-Peptide is present in the blood or urine. The pancreas produces it in nearly equal amounts to insulin. It can thus be used to measure the body's insulin production. This test is mainly used to differentiate Type I from Type II diabetes. Insulin and C-peptide levels are low in type I diabetes. Insulin and C-Peptide levels are elevated in type II diabetes.

Doctors recommend this test to monitor diabetes treatment. 0.5-2.0ng/mL suggest Type I diabetes and Type II diabetes, respectively. Normal values are 0.5-2.0ng/mL. 

Why Done? 

The C-peptide test is required:

• To help diagnose low blood sugar caused by insulin-producing tumours or insulin injections.

• To assess the therapeutic response of the insulinomas (tumours): A decrease in C-peptide levels in an insulinoma patient indicates a response to treatment; an increase may signal a recurrence.

• To assess a person with metabolic syndrome (abdominal obesity, elevated blood glucose and/or insulin resistance, abnormal lipids, and hypertension).

• After pancreatic transplantation: After pancreatic islet cell transplantation to restore insulin production, C-peptide levels can be used to assess the procedure's success.

Procedure: 

You'll have blood extracted from an arm vein. 

How does one prepare for the test? 

For the 8-12 hours leading up to the test, don't eat or drink anything but water.
