You may also need a Chest X-Ray-

  • If your doctor needs to check how well your treatment is working or how  the disease is progressing
  • To check your lung and lung cavity after surgery
  • It can be done as a part of complete physical examination or before you have surgery
  • To see  where is your cardiac pacemaker wires and other internal devices are located
  • To check on symptoms related to the lung disease or heart
  • To see other devices such as central venous catheters, endotracheal tubes, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes etc.

How Do I Prepare for a Chest Xray?

  • Your doctor/health care provider explains the procedure to you beforehand. You may ask an question that you have about the X ray and procedure
  • You are generally asked to sign a X ray consent form that gives permission to do the procedure on you. You should go through the form carefully, ask if you have any question coming in mind which is not clear, and sign
  • You usually do not need to stop eating or drinking before the X Ray scan. You usually not need to take any medication before the X Ray Exam/
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant since X Rays are usually not recommended as it may harm the unborn child unless it is being performed for the foetus itself
  • You should waer loose comfortable clothes, as you may need to remove them during exam or such loose that radiologists can reach the chest 
  • You should tell your provider about any body piercings if you have as it might result into false readings if not told and removed prior.
  • You must follow the instructions that your healthcare provider gives you to get ready.

  • You will be asked to remove any clothing, jewellery or other objects that may interfere in the procedure
  • You will be given a gown to wear during the Scan
  • Depending upon the area to be scanned, you  might be asked to Sit, Stand, or lie down.
  • For standing or sitting you need to stand or sit in front of the x ray plate. You will then be naked to roll your shoulders forward, take a deep breath and hold it until the x ray is done. If you are unable to hold your breath, the technologist will take picture by watching how you breathe.
  • You need to stay still and stable during the X ray as it might get blurred if you are moving and affects the quality of the Xray image.
  • For a side view angle Chest Xray, you will be asked to turn you side and raise your arms above your head. You will be told to take a deep breath and hold it as the Xray is shooted.
  • The technologist steps aside and behind a special window while the Chest Xray is being Taken.

The Chest Xrays are very effective diagnostic tool and are painless and quick. But may need to face some discomfort or pain from moving into different positions f you have had a very recent surgery or injury.
