Overview

When a person experiences ongoing chest pain, difficulty breathing or an abnormal heart X-ray result, of course, it leads to worry. If you don't feel well, it's only natural to worry as your chest is also the place where your heart and lungs reside. An MRI of the Chest might be ordered if a more detailed picture of the complex structures in your chest are needed. You might be a little scared of getting an x-ray of your chest, but don't be, it is very common, painless and not invasive. It's just the most effective and correct way of determining the definite cause of your symptom which will be the most helpful approach to take treatment.

What is the MRI of the chest?

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a very high-end diagnostic technique which produces very detailed, very dimensional pictures of your chest's internal structures.

The MRI is not like an X-ray or CT scan, which uses any type of ionizing radiation. Rather, it employs a very safe strong magnetic field to be used in conjunction with radio waves. This special technology is specifically designed to obtain clear images of the soft tissues of your body, such as heart muscle, heart valves, major blood vessels, lymph nodes and chest wall. Remember, you are providing your physician with a digital map of your chest's anatomy that is very detailed, clear and high resolution – and no detail is left out.

Why is this Scan So Crucial?

This is one of the main reasons why MRI is better than other imaging techniques is that it shows a problem clearly, without any doubt, as to where it is. This scan can be ordered by your healthcare provider to help diagnose:

Cardiac MRI: To closely examine the structure, pumping function, thickness and injury of the heart following a heart attack.

Tumors and Masses: To accurately detect, size or monitor abnormal growths of cells, cysts or enlarged lymph nodes in the chest.

Blood Vessel Issues: To fully inspect big arteries including the aorta for aneurysms, rips or blockage.

Assessment of rib and sternum area – deep bone and nerve involvement in the rib and sternum area to be able to easily assess more complex muscle tears.

What to Expect in the MRI Room?

Preparation: All metal objects, including watches, coins, jewellery, hairpins, etc. will need to be removed from the machine because it is extremely powerful. You will be changed in comfort into a gown which the clinic has provided for you of medical grade metal.

This is the Process: You will be on a cushioned sliding table, comfortably lying back. A specially designed receiver coil will be carefully positioned over your chest to get the best quality images as the table will slowly move into the scanner. This is the stillness you'll require that you will be surprised at. Note: This could take a couple seconds to start holding your breath for a few seconds (10-15) to not get the pictures blurring with your breathing.

The scanner emits a sound of tapping, knocking and whirring rhythmically. The technician will be able to use ear plugs or ear comfortable headphones, to play music and cover the noise.

Time: The process can be approached as time is of the essence and usually will take 30 to 60 minutes.
