What is the role of PET scan in lung cancer?

The 2 main types of Lung Cancers are: Small Cell Lung Cancer and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Among these, majority lung cancers are Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for more than 75% of cases.

PET scan is often used along with CT scan (PET-CT scan) to get morphological, anatomical localization as well as functional aspects of lung cancer.

PET scan can be used for the following in case of lung cancer patients:

PET scan in suspected lung cancer – in case lung cancer is suspected due to visible pulmonary nodules in some other imaging technique in a patient, PET scan is used for diagnosis. PET scan can differentiate a benign lung lesion from a malignant lung lesion. This is possible due to difference in metabolic activity; malignant lesion appears more metabolically active.

PET scan in staging of lung cancer – PET scans are used in lung cancer staging, in order to employ appropriate treatment, staging is often related with extent of metastasis. As the cancer advances in stage, the possibility of having distant metastasis increases. Staging involves evaluation of the following:

  • Size of tumor
  • Location of tumor
  • Metastasis of tumor
  • Evaluation of mediastinal lymph node

PET scan in metastasis of tumor – whole body PET scan is useful in identifying metastasis i.e., spreading of malignant tumor to other body parts from lungs.

PET scan for prognosis in lung cancer – depending on the stage, the extent of metastasis, and the locations of tumor, personalized and well structured prognosis is employed for each patient. Also, based on the responsiveness of the tumor to treatment, prognosis can be modified.

PET scan for assessment of lung cancer treatment – PET scan is used to check the effectiveness of ongoing treatment to localize and eliminate cancer. It is used to see the responsiveness of cancer to treatment, so as to modify treatment accordingly

PET scan for localization of metastatic cancer – restricting the spread of cancer after finding the locations in the body

PET scan for recurrence of lung cancer – PET scan is used to check for recurrence of cancer in fully-treated patients, only if the patients are symptomatic

What type of PET scan is used for lung cancer?

Usually, Whole Body PET scan is used for evaluating lung cancer in patients. Whole body PET scan helps in knowing about the locations of metastatic tumor, localization of tumor, staging of cancer, assessment of treatment and for recurrence of tumor in any part of the body.
