What is CT scan KUB?

Computed tomography scan of kidneys, ureters and bladder  also known as CT scan KUB or CT KUB or CT KUB scan/test is a diagnostic tool used for the identification and evaluation of many disorders or conditions involving  the kidneys, ureters or urinary bladder.

It is a rapid, non-invasive, painless and safe technique utilized for the delineation of anatomical details of the excretory system of your body. It uses rotatory X-rays machines and a computer to obtain series of pictures from different angles and generate cross-sectional images known as slices of kidneys, ureters and urinary bladder for better detection, localization and diagnosis of various pathologies and conditions affecting them such as tumors, renal stones, urinary obstruction etc. Using this technique, three-dimensional images can also be constructed.

Compared to traditional X-rays, it provides more detailed information of the excretory system. CT KUB can be performed with contrast agent (CECT KUB) or without contrast agent (NCCT KUB).

What are the uses/purpose of CT KUB Scan?

CT scan KUB is a crucial test that may be used for identification, localization, diagnosis, management and monitoring of many diseases and conditions affecting the excretory system and the surrounding structures including:

2) Difficulty in micturition/passing urine.

3) Renal tumors

17) Urinary retention

18) Urinary incontinence

19) Polycystic kidney disease

20) To guide procedures such as renal biopsy

21) Pre-operative before surgical approach to kidneys.

The procedure of CT scan KUB includes the following steps:

1) Written consent is required before the procedure begins.

2) You will be asked to remove all the metallic elements like jewellery, hearing aids, metallic hair clips, metallic underwired bras, wallets, keys, coins, cards containing metallic strips, belts, goggles etc.

3) If CT KUB with contrast dye is being scheduled then you will be given an intravenous injection of a contrast agent that yield high clarity images on CT scan.

7) Before scan, your assisting Doctor will explain about all the possible adverse effects of using contrast material such as itching, rash, swelling etc. Your KFT report will be required to rule out any kidney disease/pathology and to check your GFR.

8) Then you will be asked to lie supine on examination table which will slide and place you inside the scanner.

9) You need to lie still during the procedure as body movements may interfere with the quality of images produced.

10) Your Radiologist will take several images to evaluate the underlying pathology and at the end these images will be interpreted for making a definite diagnosis.

What happens after CT scan KUB?

1) You will be allowed to leave the scanning room once the procedure is over.

2) You may be asked to wait in observation room for some time to evaluate any possible side effects if contrast dye has been used.

3) Drink water to eliminate contrast material from your body.

4) CT scanning of KUB usually takes about 20-30 minutes. However, it may last longer depending upon the severity of your illness and associated co-morbid conditions.

5) If you breastfeed your baby then ask your Radiologist or Physician about when to resume breastfeed post injection of contrast agent.

6) You will get reports on the next day. However, you may get the image films on the same day if requested by your treating Doctor.

7) These reports will be then evaluated by your Clinician to make a proper management plan of your condition.

What are the side effects/risks of CT KUB?

CT scan is usually a safe procedure. The radiation in CT scan is low and contrast dye if used in the procedure, doesn’t stay for longtime in your body. Drinking water can help to flush the contrast faster from your body.

However, some concerns about CT KUB are as follows:

1) Allergic reactions to contrast agent, although rare but can happen in some individuals. However, these allergic reactions are usually mild.

2) Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should better avoid certain medications and test for the safety of baby. Ask your Doctor before undergoing CT scan KUB.

3) Contrast induced nephropathy may occur in some individuals especially those with kidney disease.

4) Radiation exposure and increased risk of cancer with repeated scans especially in those with high risk factors.
