What is CA 19-9 test?

CA19-9 is also known as carbohydrate antigen or cancer antigen or sialyl-Lewis antigen. It is a tetra-saccharide compound produced by the cancer cells or even normal cells in response to certain cancers especially pancreatic cancer. Thus, it serves as a tumor marker.

However, a raised CA19-9 level doesn’t always mean cancers, CA19-9 level might get increased in other conditions too that affect your body such as diseases of bile duct or pancreatitis. Therefore, it is not primarily used for screening cancers. However, it acts as a useful marker in the assessment of the prognosis of diagnosed cancers, checking the effectiveness of treatment and monitoring for relapses.

CA 19-9 test measures the level of CA 19-9 in your blood. It evaluates the level of CA 19-9 using the technique of radioimmunoassay (RIA).

High levels of CA 19-9 can be seen in which conditions?

What samples are required for CA 19-9 test?

Usually, Blood (Serum) sample is taken for the estimation of CA19-9 level in your body. However, CA 19-9 level can be checked in urine, CSF or semen.

How do I prepare for CA 19-9 test?

Follow these simple steps if you are going for CA 19-9 test:

  • Take an appointment: Fix an appointment in a diagnostic lab having the facility of CA 19-9 to avoid waiting at the time of test.
  •  Food: You can take your usual meals. Fasting is usually not required for CA 19-9 test if done alone.
  • Medications: Inform your doctor about all the drugs and supplements that you are currently taking. Certain agents may alter the test result of CA 19-9 such as Vitamins. Your doctor may advice some modifications before the test if required.
  • Exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise before the test as it may alter test results.
  • Smoking:  Avoid smoking before the test as it may affect the test results.

What is the procedure for CA 19-9 test?

The procedure of CA 19-9 test includes the following steps:

  • First a torniquet will be tied around your arm.
  • Then a cotton swab soaked with 70% alcohol is used to clean/disinfect the injection site before needle insertion.
  • Then a small needle will be inserted in the vein of your arm and required amount of blood is withdrawn from it and collected in a test tube.
  • Then the needle is removed and an adhesive sticker is placed on the puncture site to prevent it from infections.
  • Sample is sent to laboratory for further processing and testing.

What is the risk/side effects of CA 19-9 test?

CA 19-9 test is a safe procedure with usually no side effects. However, some individuals may experience some of the side effects as mentioned below:

  • Pain at injection site.
  • Hematoma
  • Multiple punctures to locate vein in those where veins are not easily accessible.
  • Bleeding at puncture site, especially patients having bleeding or clotting disorders or those on anticoagulant therapy.
  • Infection at puncture site
  • Thrombophlebitis.

How long it takes to get CA 19-9 test report?  

CA 19-9 test reports are usually available within 24 hours of sample collection.
