17 Hydroxyprogesterone 17-OHP

This test is done to know the amount of 17 Hydroxyprogesterone in the blood which is a hormone produced by adrenal glands as the part of producing cortisol. This test is also helpful in identifying a rare congenital disorder named congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

This disease take place when a genetic mutation does not let the adrenal gland to produce adequate amounts of cortisol. In the process of working hard to make enough amount of cortisol for the body, adrenal gland produces extra 17 Hydroxyprogesterone with some other male sex hormones.
