CT Thorax Test

CT Thorax Test

CT (Computerized Tomography) (CT) Thorax is a scan that shows the morphological structures of organs in the thoracic cavity like the heart, major blood vessels, lungs, pleural cavity, and other organs in the mediastinum and upper part of the abdominal cavity like the liver.

The CT Thorax examination is used to make a diagnosis.

  • Blood or fluid build-up in the lungs
  • Pulmonary infection
  • When contrast medium is injected, tumours and other abnormalities increase the fluid content in the lungs.

The radiographer will go over the procedure with you.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you may be pregnant, notify your doctor or radiographer.

If the examination necessitates the use of contrast medium, the following guidelines must be followed:

  • You must fast for at least 4 - 6 hours prior to the procedure.

  • Take the steroid medication provided 12 and 2 hours before the examination.

  • It is strongly advised that you do not wear or bring any valuables to the examination.

To avoid artefacts on the image, remove all metallic objects such as hair clips, earrings, chains, and so on.

If contrast media is required for your CT Thorax examination, your doctor will insert a needle into a vein in your hand or arm.

Clothes or accessories with metallic objects in the thoracic area (for example, chain, bra, and others) must be removed, and you must change into the hospital gown.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are pregnant, please notify your doctor or radiographer.

Your weight will be measured.

You will be asked to lie down on the examination couch.

The radiographer will provide detailed instructions for the examination.

The radiographer will position your body, and you must remain still.

The examination couch will be transferred to the gantry.

The radiographer will be in charge of operating the CT scanner in the control room.

The CT scan will begin.

Despite the fact that the examination room door is closed, you can communicate with the radiographer/or doctor via intercom.

You are advised not to move during the procedure (CT Thorax) to avoid image distortion, which will necessitate a repeat examination.

If a contrast medium is needed during the examination, you may feel discomfort when it is injected into your vein, such as a sudden warm sensation, nausea, dizziness, and other symptoms. All of these symptoms, however, are only temporary.

The doctor will constantly monitor your condition to ensure that you are fine.

The images that are created will be displayed on the monitor.

When the examination is finished, the examination couch will be removed from the gantry.

You are free to leave the examination couch and change your clothes.

If you do experience any problems, please do inform the radiographer on duty.
