Ultrasound Hip Joint Test

Ultrasonography (USG), also known as Ultrasound Hip, is an imaging technique that produces images of the body's internal structures.

Hip ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the hip's muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, bone, and soft tissues. It is used to aid in the diagnosis of abnormalities and may be used in infants to screen for hip developmental dysplasia. Ultrasound is non-invasive, safe, and does not emit ionising radiation.

The doctor prescribes this test to aid in the diagnosis of unexplained discomfort, oedema, or infection. It is also helpful for detecting developmental dysplasia, the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorder in neonates that causes the hip to become dysplastic and dislocate.

You may need to remove jewellery and metal objects that could obstruct the image.

• Notify your technician of any stents, implants, or pacemakers.

• Notify your sonographer technician if you are or may be pregnant. Radiation may harm the foetus if not disclosed to the doctor (and sonography technician). Precautions can be made to reduce the foetus' radiation exposure.

• You should wear loose-fitting clothes.

Most hip ultrasound exams will have you sit on an examination table and lie on your back or side.

Almost all ultrasound studies on infants and children are performed on the examination table with the child lying on his or her back.

The radiologist (a doctor who specialises in supervising and interpreting radiology exams) or sonographer will place you on the exam table. They will apply a water-based gel to the area of the body that is being examined. The gel will aid the transducer in making firm contact with the body. It also removes air pockets between the transducer and the skin, which can prevent sound waves from entering your body. The sonographer positions the transducer on the body and moves it back and forth over the area of interest until the desired images are captured.

You should be able to resume your normal activities immediately following an ultrasound exam.
