NCCT Cervical Spine Test

NCCT Cervical Spine Test

Non-contrast Computed Tomography (NCCT) for the cervical spine aids in the visualisation of the bones in the back of the neck (cervical vertebrae/spine). The cervical spine is made up of seven neck vertebrae, the first vertebrae of the thoracic spine, and the disc spaces between them. It is used to determine the source of pain in the neck, shoulder, upper back, or arm, as well as tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arm or hand. It aids in the detection of cervical spine fractures and herniated discs.

This test is done for:

  1. To detect the cause of any unexplained neck pain or upper back pain
  2. It is an imaging scan that is used to view the cervical/spine vertebrae that are in the back of the neck. The cervical spine is consisting of seven vertebras(C1-C7) in the neck area, the first vertebrae of the thoracic spine, and the disk spaces in between them.To diagnose the root cause of an unexplained neck pain
  3. To diagnose the root cause of an unexplained upper back pain
  4. To detect fractures, inflammations, and infections of the bones that are not visible properly in simple x-ray
  5. To diagnose the root cause of shoulder pain
  6. To diagnose the root cause of arm pain
  7. If the patient is having the symptoms such as tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arm or hand.
  8. It helps in detecting fractures in the cervical spine and herniated discs.
  9. To detect and diagnose a herniated disk
  10. To detect malformation in children
  11. To detect genetic defects during spinal development in children
  12. To identify infection, injury, inflammation of the soft tissues such as muscle, and ligaments of the spine.
  13. To diagnose/detect suspected infection, osteoporosis, deformities, abnormal growth of the bones

Pregnant women should notify their doctor (and the x-ray technician) because the radiations could harm the foetus. If necessary, precautions can be taken to reduce the fetus's exposure to radiation.

You may be asked to wear a hospital gown during the scan, depending on the area to be imaged.
