The Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) test is non invasive test that is used to evaluate the functioning of the eyes to the brain. The VEP test aids in analyzing the health of the optic nerves and the visual cortex. It provides valuable information about the vision-related conditions and disorders.

What Does a Visual Evoked Potential Test (Vep) Diagnose?

VEP test helps the provider to assess the function of the visual pathways and related problems like -

Multiple sclerosis (MS)

Glioma

Visual pathway damage related to head or brain trauma.

Toxic optic neuropathy due to certain medications or other toxins like carbon monoxide.

Visual pathway issues due to infections, such as meningeal tuberculosis.

How VEP Test Works?

To conduct this test, the healthcare provider instructs the patient to seat in a comfortable position and focus on a visual stimulus, such as a checkerboard pattern or a flashing light. Various electrodes are placed on the scalp of the patient to record the electrical activity generated by the visual stimulation and transmitted through the optic nerves to the brain. The recorded electrical activities are then analyzed to assess the timing and strength of the response of the brain to the visual stimulus. This helps the doctor in the diagnosis and monitoring of visual disorders.

A specialist interprets the wave pattern and fined out if there is any abnormal activity.
