How To Prepare for an Ultrasound?

Commonly Ultrasound procedures do not require any preparation. For certain cases you should drink 2-8 glass of water one hour before your ultrasound scheduled. You shouldn’t urinate before the ultrasonic scanning so it is advisable you should arrive at your appointment with a full bladder.

Wear loose clothing and you may be asked to remove your jewellery during ultrasound. So, it’s better to leave your valuable things at home.

If there is specific instruction given by your doctor you will need to follow.

What happens during an ultrasound?

Ultrasounds that involve applying the transducer (probe) over your skin (not in your body), follow these general steps:

  1. You’ll lie on your side or back on a comfortable table.
  2. The ultrasound technician will apply a small amount of water-soluble gel on your skin over the area to be examined. This gel doesn’t harm your skin or stain your clothes.
  3. The technician will move a handheld transducer or probe over the gel to get images inside your body.
  4. The technician may ask you to be very still or to hold your breath for a few seconds to create clearer pictures.
  5. Once the technician has gotten enough images, they’ll wipe off any remaining gel on your skin and you’ll be done.

An ultrasound test usually takes 30 minutes to an hour. If you have any questions about your specific type of ultrasound, ask your healthcare provider.

WHEN TO AVOID?

No specific condition

WHEN WILL I GET MY REPORTS?

Time will depend on what type of ultrasound you get. It may take 30 minutes to several hours. Your provider will upload your reports online within 24 hours.

What is the procedure for Ultrasound?

The procedure of ultrasound is performed in various stages from the start till the end. These steps include:

  1. Ultrasound Preparation: Before going for the ultrasound, a patient needs to avoid food and drinks for 8 to 12 hours during the abdominal ultrasound. In other ultrasounds, the patient may not need to take fast.
  2. Application of the Gel for Ultrasound: Gel is applied to the body of a patient for the smooth movement of the probe over the skin. The Gel also prevents air from getting in between the skin, which could block the sound waves and affect the results.
  3. Movement of probe or transducer: The probe or transducer is moved over the skin for scanning of the area. This transducer sends high-frequency sound waves into the skin. The waves bounce back after hitting the objects in the body.
  4. Creating Images from the ultrasound procedure: The Transducer attached to the scanner converts the sound waves into electrical signals. The scanner uses the speed and time of the echoes to generate images of the organs on the screen.
  5. Removing of ultrasound gel: After the completion of the procedure, the ultrasound gel is wiped off the skin of the body.
