Scrotal Ultrasound Procedure

An imaging test that examines the scrotum is scrotal ultrasound. The Scrotal is the flesh-covered sac that houses the testicles and hangs between the legs at the base of the penis.

Why is Scrotal Ultrasound Done?

  • Identify the cause of one or both of the testicles growing larger.
  • Examine any lumps or masses in the testicles, either one or both.
  • Determine the cause of the testicular pain.
  • Show how the testicles' blood flow works.

Preparation

This test doesn't require any special preparation.

Procedure

With your legs stretched out, you are lying on your back. The medical professional either lay a cloth over your thighs under your scrotum or covers the area with large strips of adhesive tape. The testicles will be placed side by side and the scrotal sac will be slightly elevated.

To help the sound waves travel into the scrotal sac, a transparent gel is administered. The technologist will then glide a portable probe (an ultrasound transducer) across the scrotum. High-frequency sound waves are emitted by the ultrasound machine. To produce an image, these waves reflect off certain regions of the scrotum.

Risks/Side Effects

There is little discomfort.
