Procedure of CT PNS (paranasal sinus)

CT of the PNS is primarily used to: aid in the diagnosis of sinusitis.

Examine sinuses that have fluid in them or thickened sinus membranes.

detect the presence of infectious diseases

provide additional information on nasal cavity and sinus tumours

By defining anatomy, you can plan for surgery.

There are several types of PNS CT Scan:

  1. NCCT PNS or CT scan PNS

It is performed in routine cases to detect simple abnormalities. It employs low resolution and radiation. As a result, even minor changes in the vessels were noticed.

  1. PNS CECT

CT PNS with contrast, though uncommon, a contrast dye is administered to the patient prior to the CT scan. It improves the contrast in the images. This aids in better diagnosis.

2. PNS HRCT

CT with high resolution PNS employs high radiation and software to capture higher-resolution images.

Preparation for CT PNS are:

  • You should dress in loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Remove all metal objects from your body because they may interfere with the CT images.
  • If your CT PNS requires contrast material, your doctor may advise you not to eat or drink anything for a few hours before the test.
  • Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking and any allergies you have.
  • Side effects may be exacerbated by a recent illness or other medical condition.
  • Women must notify their healthcare providers if they are pregnant.

CT scans use multiple x-ray beams and electronic x-ray detectors that rotate around the patient. To create two-dimensional cross-sectional images of the body, a special computer is used.

Your healthcare provider will instruct you to lie on your back or face down with your chin elevated.

During the procedure, the technician will ensure that the patient remains in a specific position.

A contrast material is injected into some patients to make the tissues and blood vessels appear clear. The contrast agent is injected into the veins.

The table is then slowly moved through the machine while the scanning procedure is carried out.

Any movement can degrade the quality of an image, so you may be asked to hold your breath.

In a spiral motion, the machine rotates around the individual's face part.

The entire procedure takes only 10 minutes.

After the test you can go back to your normal activities and diet as directed by your healthcare provider.
