Gastroesophageal (GER) Scan Procedure

There are only a few simple things to do before the Gastroesophageal (GER) Scan; nothing else is necessary.

  • Depending on your child’s age, she might not be able to eat or drink anything, including water, for some time before the test since her stomach needs to be empty. Your child’s doctor will tell you how long he/she needs to fast.
  • Your youngster may resume regular eating habits after the exam. The actual test lasts 90 minutes on average. It will take longer to complete the test if your child’s stomach empties slowly.
  • If your kid requires a special diet or drinks liquid from a bottle, please bring a full bottle of breast milk, milk, or formula with you to the test. A parent or legal guardian must accompany minors under the age of 18 at all times.

  • You and your child will be taken into an examination room by a technician who will explain the test to you both.
  • The formula or milk will be combined with a little amount of radioisotope.
  • Your youngster won’t notice the medication’s flavor or scent, nor will they experience any negative side effects.
  • Within 10 to 15 minutes, we’ll ask your youngster to drink as much as they can. Your support will be beneficial.
  • Your youngster will lie down on the imaging bed following the feeding (a lightly padded table). To offer comfort and a source of distraction, you can stand close to your child’s head.
  • The camera will create the photographs in roughly one hour. Many kids just relax, watch a movie (we have DVDs and videotapes here), or listen to a parent read a story.
  • Before you depart, a technologist will determine whether additional photos are required and submit a report to your child’s doctor.
