DTPA Scan Procedure

Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), also known as pentetic acid, is an amino polycarboxylic acid containing five carboxymethyl groups attached to the diethylenetriamine backbone.

A renal DTPA scan is a nuclear medicine test that compares the function of the left and right kidneys by measuring kidney function with a little amount of radioactive material (radioisotope). This method can be used to discover and identify any obstructions.

DTPA SCAN USED TO ASSESS

  • Any kidney tumours or cysts
  • Any swelling brought on by a disease of any type
  • Any deviation brought on by a kidney transplant
  • Any obstruction of the renal arteries as a result of trauma or damage
  • Any renal issues or kidney failure

PATIENT PREPARATION

  • One litre of water must be consumed in the hour before your test. You are free to use the restroom as frequently as necessary.
  • In case you are using blood pressure medication, kindly let the office know.
  • Bring your Medicare card, the doctor's referral, and any pertinent most recent scans or tests.

PROCEDURE

  • Depending on the precise facts we need regarding your kidneys before your scan, the fundamental steps for doing a DTPA Renal Scan may differ slightly. For instance, it could be necessary to administer a blood pressure medication or an injection called Lasix before or at some point during the examination.
  • A tiny injection of a radioactive tracer will be given to you. No change in how you feel will result from this injection. The camera can see the Kidneys and Bladder thanks to this injection. As soon as the scan begins, photos are taken for 30 minutes while the subject is laying beneath the camera.
  • It is possible to administer a second Lasix injection to encourage the kidneys to empty.
  • You might be asked to use the restroom and empty your bladder when the scan is finished, then come back for another five minutes of imaging.

AFTERCARE

After the scan, it's critical to replenish your fluid intake to prevent dehydration. Some persons who take captopril experience extremely low blood pressure. If you feel faint, lightheaded, or ill, please let the professionals at the institution where you are having the scan know.
