What is the MALARIA SEROLOGY Test?

Serology looks for antibodies to malaria parasites, either by using indirect immunofluorescence (IFA) or an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Serology can't tell if you have a virus right now, but it can tell if you've had one in the past.

Why Done? 

The most common symptoms of malaria include fever, shaking, chills, profuse sweating, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and muscle pain.

Malaria is not communicable, as many assume. It can also be passed on to an unborn child by an infected mother during blood transfusions, organ transplants, and needle sharing (illegal drugs). The parasites multiply in the liver and infest the red blood cells that deliver oxygen throughout the body. Malaria symptoms are similar to flu symptoms, making diagnosis challenging and requiring a malaria blood test.
