Cyclosporine

Cyclosporine

The cyclosporine test is used to determine how much cyclosporine is in your blood. Cyclosporine is an immune-suppressant that helps patients undergoing kidney, liver, and heart transplants avoid rejection. It reduces the body's natural defenses, increasing the chances of the transplanted organ surviving. It is also used to diagnose the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in some circumstances.

The Cyclosporine test is used to avoid overdosing and manage the proper dosage.

Why done?

It helps doctors modify the initial dosage of cyclosporine in patients who have undergone organ transplants. Low levels of cyclosporine may increase the chances of organ rejection. Higher amounts of cyclosporine may lessen the chances of organ rejection.

Procedure:

It is a serological test, implying the test sample is a serum (blood). The blood sample is taken in a sterile environment, and the test takes 24-36 hours to provide findings.

How does one prepare for the test?

The sample is taken before the patient receives the next dose. A blood sample is taken 12 hours after the last dose before a new one is given to a patient who takes the drug twice a day.
