What Is Colour Doppler Ultrasound?

How To Prepare for Colour Doppler Ultrasound?

  • Wear loose fitting clothes.
  • Remove your jewellery prior to the test.
  •  For DVT (Deep vein thrombosis) you don’t need to prepare anything else.

But for belly ultrasound, your doctor may tell you to not to eat or drink anything during that time.

  • You can drink a small amount of water to take your regular medicines.
  • Pregnant women who want Doppler ultrasound need to drink 2 litre of water 1 hour before the exam.

What Happens During a Colour Doppler Ultrasound?

An experienced sonographer performs this test. It takes 30-60 minutes. Depending on your test reason, you may lie on your back or side on a table, or you may sit up.

During the procedure sonographer apply gel to your skin. Then small probe glide over your skin & you’ll feel some pressure from the device, but unless you have tenderness, it won’t hurt. Through transducer computer takes all the sound waves and turns them into moving images that you can see live on a screen

The sonographer cleans the gel from your skin at the end of the test. 

After the procedure, a report will be prepared by the radiologist with the images & reports will be released at the soonest.

What Do the Results mean?

The normal Doppler result means the blood vessels have a normal flow of blood and there is no issue in the vessels such as blockage, clots, closure, or narrowing of blood vessels.

If you do have a clot, you may have more than one Doppler ultrasound over a few days to see whether the clot grows or any new ones show up.
