The H. pylori breath test is a simple and safe test that is used to detect H. pylori bacteria, diagnose active H. pylori infection, and determine if treatment has cured the infection. This test is also known as the urea breath test. Whenever you feel severe pain in your digestive tract or you may face symptoms of peptic ulcer, which include burning pain in your middle or upper stomach between meals or at night, Pain that may occur frequently again and again, such as bloating, heartburn, nausea or vomiting, and weight loss, then under such circumstances you should definitely rush to the hospital for a doctor consultation, and here Ganesh Diagnostic Centre is available for you at your location with highly experienced physicians and all well-equipped testing machines for our patient's satisfaction.

Pylori breath test Procedure

During the H. pylori breath test,  you will be required to exhale into a balloon-like bag. This carbon dioxide that you have exhaled into the bag will be measured to provide a baseline level for comparison. Then, you will be asked to drink a small amount of lemon flavour solution, which contains a substance called urea. 15 minutes after drinking the solution, you will exhale into a second bag. The amount of carbon dioxide that you have exhaled into the second bag will also be measured for H. pylori bacteria, if present, which will break down the urea solution that you have drunk. If the exhaled dioxide in the second sample is higher than the first one, then you may have a positive test for the presence of H. pylori, and after this test, our physicians and doctor can better consult you to diagnose your disease.

You are not required to eat anything before 1 hour of the test on the day of the procedure. A healthcare provider will explain the procedure in detail. After the procedure, your breath samples will be sent to the library laboratory, where they are tested. Without any restriction, you can continue your normal life until the test arrives.

  • This test is totally painless, and it hardly takes 20 minutes.
  • The test requires you to swallow a capsule containing 14C urea, a mildly radioactive substance, with a cup of water.
  • After 3 minutes, you will be given another small cup of water to drink. After 7 minutes, you will be required to blow on the balloon, and the test result will be forwarded to your doctor.
  • After the test results, further steps can be taken by the doctor to diagnose and treat the urea breath issue.

The urea breath test is of great importance in medicine.

Importance of the Urea breath test

Here are the main reasons why this test is considered important:

Accurate diagnosis

The urea breath test is a highly accurate method of detecting the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria in the stomach. Its high sensitivity and specificity make it a reliable tool for diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infection.

Non-Invasive

In contrast to invasive procedures such as endoscopy and biopsy, the urea breath test is a non-invasive diagnostic method. This involves drinking a solution containing a special form of urea and spitting it out into a collection bag. This makes it a more comfortable and convenient option for patients and eliminates the need for more invasive procedures.

Early detection of H. pylori infection

The H. pylori infection is a common bacterial infection associated with various gastrointestinal diseases, including peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, and an increased risk of stomach cancer. The urea breath test enables early detection of Helicobacter pylori, allowing for timely treatment and the prevention of possible complications.

Monitoring of therapeutic effects

After treatment for H. pylori infection, the urea breath test plays an important role in evaluating treatment success. This will help determine if the bacteria have died or if further treatment is needed. Monitoring treatment efficacy ensures that appropriate treatment is provided and reduces the risk of recurrence.

Cost-effectiveness

The urea breath test is an inexpensive diagnostic tool for H. pylori infection. This eliminates the need for more expensive and invasive procedures and reduces the medical costs associated with diagnosing and monitoring H. pylori-related disease.

A urea breath test helps improve patient outcomes and management of Helicobacter pylori-associated gastrointestinal disorders by accurately diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infection, monitoring treatment response, and enabling early intervention. It is important to consult your doctor for advice on using the urea breath test and interpreting the results. They can provide specific instructions, answer questions, and determine the appropriate course of action based on individual circumstances.
