What is Penile Color Doppler?

Penis is an external male genital organ. It is a highly vascularized structure that is composed of smooth muscles and various types of soft tissues.

A color doppler scan of penis, also known as penile color doppler or penile doppler ultrasonography is a type of ultrasound imaging that is used for the evaluation of the anatomical structure and blood flow through arteries and veins of the penis. It provides an excellent analysis and assessment of normal as well as pathological conditions of the penis along with optimal accuracy in real-time.

It is a fast, minimally-invasive and high-performance technique for mapping blood flow through your penis. Color doppler or color flow doppler uses sound waves which are reflected by moving blood cells such as RBCs. These reflected sound waves are captured by ultrasound machine and are converted into different colors using a computer, demonstrating real time speed and direction of blood flow, flow turbulence and patency of blood vessels etc.

Why Do I Need a Penile Color Doppler Scan?

Your doctor may order a penile color doppler scan for the screening, identification, diagnosis, monitoring and management of various diseases or conditions affecting the penis including-

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Evaluation of post-operative erectile dysfunction
  • Priapism
  • Identification of silent coronary artery disease (CAD) in male patients
  • Endothelial dysfunction
  • Peyronie Disease
  • Calcified nodules
  • Calcified fibrous plaques
  • Patients non-responding to PDE5 inhibitors
  • Penile fibrosis
  • Pre-operative evaluation before the surgical approach to penis etc.

How Do I Prepare for Penile Color Doppler Ultrasound?

Follow these simple steps if you are going for a penile color Doppler scan:

  • Take an appointment: Schedule your appointment in a diagnostic center having the facility of Penile Color Doppler ultrasound.
  • Food and medications: Take your usual food and medications unless otherwise specified by your health care professional. Fasting is not required for penile doppler scan.
  • Clothing: Wear loose and comfortable clothes so that your body part which is being scanned can be assessed easily.
  • Hygiene: Maintain hygiene and do not apply oils, creams or gels over the area which need to be scanned.
  • Smoking/Tobacco: Avoid smoking or tobacco chewing before the test as nicotine in these substances may case vasoconstriction which may alter the test results.
  • Reports: Carry your relevant medical and lab reports along with your doctor’s prescription while going for Color doppler scan. These may help in better evaluation of your condition.

What Is the Procedure for Penile Color Doppler Test?

The procedure for Penile Color Doppler scan may involve the following steps:

  1. Before the scan begins you need to remove clothes and undergarments from your body to expose the penile region.
  2. You will be then asked to lie supine on the examination table.
  3. A technician may then measure your Blood pressure.
  4. Your Radiologist will then apply a special gel/lubricant over your penis for the smooth gliding of probe over it.
  5. Then a linear transducer/probe will be moved over the ventral aspect of penis to obtain longitudinal and transverse views.  The transducer sends high frequency sound waves to the penis. These sound waves are reflected by the moving blood cells such RBCs and are recorded by the ultrasound machine and converted into images or graphs of different colors depicting the blood flow pattern, direction and speed of blood flow in real time. These images will be interpreted to evaluate your condition.
  6. Two readings will be taken, one before intravenous injection of vasoactive agent when the penis is flaccid and one after giving intravenous vasoactive agent in the lateral aspect of midshaft of the penis.
  7. At the end of scan, tissue paper will be provided to clean the gel/lubricant from the skin surface.

What Happens After a Penile Color Doppler Scan?

  1. Penile color doppler usually takes about 15-20 minutes for detailed evaluation. However, it may last longer in case if there are any associated co-morbid conditions.
  2. You will be allowed to leave the scanning room once the scan is over.
  3. You will be asked to wait in the observation room to check for every possible side effect of the intravenous vasoactive agent such as priapism, pain and swelling etc.
  4. After the procedure got over, your Sonographer will analyze the result and make a report of your existing conditions.
  5. You will get the reports on the same day.
  6. These reports will be evaluated by your doctor to identify the abnormality and to make a proper management plan for your current situation.
  7. Penile color doppler is usually a safe procedure. However, some complications may occur due to use of intravenous vasoactive agent such as:

What Is the Price of Penile Color Doppler Test?

Penile color doppler cost generally vary with city and location. Various diagnostic and imaging centers charges differently according to the quality of machines they provide and the offers currently availing in them. Colour Doppler sonography charges also vary with the body part which need to be examined.

Penile Color Doppler test is an advanced screening, diagnostic and monitoring tool that is available at limited diagnostic centers as it requires costly and modern equipments along with trained Radiologists to perform the scan.
