What Is the Role of Pet Scan in Breast Cancer?

What is the full form of PET scan – Positron Emission Tomography Scan

PET scan is not used for screening or diagnosis of breast cancer, because PET scan is unable to detect small breast carcinomas.

PET scan is used for the following purposes as a part of breast cancer treatment:

Metastasis – spread of cancer tissue from organ of origin to other parts of the body. It can spread to:

  • Nearby lymph nodes (metastasis to axillary lymph node)
  • Extra – axillary metastasis (clavicular and internal mammary)
  • It can also spread to distant organs such as lungs, liver, brain and bones.

Location – knowing about the exact location of tumor tissue after diagnosis of cancer

Prognosis – depending on the stage, the extent of metastasis, and the locations of tumor, personalized and well structured prognosis is employed for each patient. Also, based on the responsiveness of the tumor to treatment, prognosis can be modified.

Staging – PET scans are used in cancer staging, in order to employ appropriate treatment, staging is often related with extent of distant metastasis. As the cancer advances in stage, the possibility of having distant metastasis increases.

Assessment of treatment – PET scan is used to check the effectiveness of ongoing treatment to localize and eliminate cancer. It is used to see the responsiveness of cancer to treatment, so as to modify treatment accordingly

Localization of metastatic cancer – restricting the spread of cancer after finding the locations in the body

Recurrence of cancer – PET scan is used to check for recurrence of cancer in fully-treated patients, only if the patients are symptomatic

What Type of Pet Scan Is Used for Breast Cancer?

Usually, Whole Body PET scan is used for evaluating breast cancer in patients. Whole body PET scan helps in knowing about the locations of metastatic tumor, localization of tumor, staging of cancer, assessment of treatment and for recurrence of tumor in any part of the body.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Pet Scan for Breast Cancer?

Advantages of PET scan for breast cancer:

  • It is non-invasive procedure unlike biopsy
  • It is painless procedure
  • Enables visualization of metabolic flow in body
  • Enables detection of extra-axillary lymph nodal metastasis, for example, supraclavicular, infraclavicular and internal mammary metastasis
  • Enables detection of occult distant metastasis

Disadvantages of PET scan for breast cancer::

  • PET scan is unable to detect small breast carcinomas
  • PET scan alone can’t be used as a diagnostic tool for breast cancer, it can help in early diagnosis if clubbed with CT scan i.e., PET-CT scan
  • Frequent exposure to radiations in cancer patients can be harmful – weighing risk factor against the need for PET scan is done by healthcare professional.
