Difference Between CT Chest and HRCT Scan

In this article, we will discuss Chest CT and HRCT Scan. We will also discuss some common questions related to CT chest and HRCT.

CT (Computed Tomography) or CAT (Computed Axial Tomography) are the same procedures used to look for abnormalities like chest bone fractures, injuries, infections etc.HRCT (High-Resolution Computed Tomography) scan is the advanced version that produces high-resolution detailed images for the directions of abnormalities. The images are used to show the inside of the cross-section through the heart and lungs, which helps in the easy and early detection of abnormalities.

What does Chest CT show?

A CT scan may be done to check the chest and its organs for

  • To check the effect of treatment and keep check on tumours.

What is the difference between Routine Chest CT vs HRCT Chest?

Here is the list of abnormalities detected by regular CT scan and HRCT chest scan.

Routine chest CT scan

  • Produces low-resolution images.
  • Slice thickness is usually 5-10mm
  • Needs a low radiation dose
  • Scan length usually from 1” inch above the apices
  • Can use contrast material for more detailed pictures.
  • Detect incision more than 5 mm.

What is HRCT Chest used to show?

  • Radiation dose is high in this procedure.
  • It is done without contrast.
  • Detect 1-2mm lesions.
  • Produces high resolution of images that helps in easy and early detection of abnormality.
  • Slice thickness is
