Dengue: Symptoms, Tests for Diagnosis, How to Check Dengue Report

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that spreads into the population through mosquito bite. The mosquito that spreads dengue is female Aedes aegypti. The virus that causes dengue is dengue virus (DENV).

What is dengue and how is it caused?

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that spreads into the population through mosquito bite. The mosquito that spreads dengue is female Aedes aegypti. The virus that causes dengue is dengue virus (DENV).

During what time of year dengue attains peak and affects the majority population?

Cases of dengue are commonly seen in tropical and subtropical regions. It attain peak during rainy season (July to August). During rainy season, water logging aids in proliferation of mosquito population.

What are the common signs and symptoms of dengue fever?

Dengue infection can range from patients showing no symptoms (asymptomatic) to severe life-threatening infection (Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever).

Asymptomatic people are regarded as super-spreaders of the disease as they don’t get tested. Hence, they are not diagnosed. When mosquito bites a non-infected person after biting an infected individual, it spreads dengue to the formerly non-infected person.

Individuals, who have had dengue infection in the past, suffer from more severe and life-threatening symptoms during subsequent infections.

Here are some common signs and symptoms of a mild dengue infection:

  • Persistent and relapsing fever: fever above 100 degrees F, which is persistent, even after antipyretics, suggests dengue infection.
  • Extreme pain in muscles, bones and joints: due to extreme pain in the body, dengue fever is often referred to as Break-bone fever.
  • Continuous headaches: dengue headache feels like a throbbing pain in the head, and it is recurrent.
  • Pain in eyes (ocular pain): dengue fever is accompanied by an intense pain behind the eyes.
  • Rashes on the body: unprecedented rashes along with recurring fever suggest dengue infection.
  • Abdominal discomfort with nausea and vomiting.

Signs and symptoms to look for in case of severe dengue (Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever) infection are as follows:

  • Severe abdominal pain: in case of severe infection, abdominal discomfort also becomes severe.
  • Frequent vomiting
  • Blood in vomit, urine or stools: if blood appears in vomit, urine or stool, he/she should consult a doctor immediately.
  • Internal bleeding: which appears as bruises on skin
  • Nose bleeding and bleeding gums
  • Fatigue and restlessness
  • Rapid breathing

How is dengue fever diagnosed?

There are several diagnostic tests available for dengue infection. Based on the phase of dengue infection, doctor recommends the type of test.

For instance:

  • In acute phase of dengue infection, test for detection of NS1 (Non Structural protein 1) in blood sample is done.

NS1 antigen is present in blood during the initial days of infection, in later phases it can’t be detected because of presence of antibodies specific for NS1.

NS1 antigen is detected either by rapid test kits or by EIA.

  • In later stages, antibodies specific for dengue virus are detected such as IgG and IgM in the blood sample.

These can also be detected using rapid kits or by EIA.

  • Viral RNA can also be amplified and detected using PCR and Real Time PCR. PCR is qualitative assessment whereas Real Time PCR is quantitative assessment. These amplification techniques also confirm the serotype of Dengue Virus (DENV).

How to read/check dengue report?

Dengue report and its interpretation vary based on type of test done. The interpretation of dengue report should be done by doctor. Following are interpretations of dengue test results:

  • NS1 positive- confirms presence of dengue infection.
  • NS1 negative- doesn’t rule out the possibility of dengue infection. Symptomatic patients are advised to get for diagnosis done such as test for presence of IgG and IgM antibodies in blood.
  • IgG and IgM positive- suggests current infection of dengue virus.
  • IgG positive/ IgM negative- suggests past infection of dengue virus.
  • IgG negative/ IgM positive- suggests current infection of dengue virus or it can also be due to a related virus such as Chikungunya virus.
  • IgG and IgM negative- suggests symptoms occurring due to some other reason or it may be too soon to detect dengue virus antibodies, hence NS1 antigen tested.
  • Positive PCR suggests presence of dengue infection.
  • Real Time PCRa positive result confirms the presence of dengue infection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

What is the fastest test for dengue?

The fastest test for Dengue infection is Rapid Antigen test kits for Dengue which detect either NS1 or antibodies (IgG and IgM), or both NS1 and antibodies.

What is dengue IgG, IgM and NS1?

NS1 is an antigen which persistent in blood of Dengue infected individual during acute phase of infection.

IgG and IgM are specific antibodies against Dengue Virus (DENV) produced by the immune system of an infected individual during later stages of infection.

While diagnosing dengue during initial week of infection, NS1 is detected and in the later stages of detection, antibodies are detected in the blood sample.

What if NS1 is positive and IgM is negative?

NS1 positive and IgM negative suggest presence of acute stage infection of dengue virus.

Can blood test confirm dengue?

Yes, blood test can confirm dengue virus. NS1 antigen, IgG/IgM antibodies or viral RNA can be detected in blood samples.

How long does dengue fever last?

Symptoms of dengue fever last for 3 days to 7 days.

Symptoms start appearing after 2-7 days of infection.

How can I recover from dengue fever faster?

Here are some steps you can take in order to recover faster from dengue fever:

  • Consume more citrus fruits like amla, kiwi, orange, etc.
  • Contain the symptoms by appropriate medication prescribed by doctor.

What type of dengue is serious?

Severe dengue infection can result in Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) which can be fatal too. Consult your doctor!
