What is Whole Body Scan?

The whole body bone scan also known as triple phase bone scan. It is a nuclear imaging technique used to help in diagnosing a problem with bones. It uses a radioactive drug called a radiopharmaceutical drug. This imaging technique is used to diagnose and monitor conditions such as fractures, bone infections, skeletal pain, and spread of tumour to bones or any bone injury.

How should I prepare for the scan?

During triple phase bone scan your healthcare provider will ask you to remove metal objects, jewellery that could interfere with the imaging process. Patients need to change their clothes into hospital gowns. It’s important to inform your doctor about your pregnancy or medical health issues and if you have any allergy to medications.

What happens during a Triple Phase Bone Scan Test?

You are settled comfortably in an area and in case of paediatric or uncooperative patients, sedation is suggested.

A small dose of radioactive agent is injected via IV, then you will be isolated for 45-60 minutes.

This radio tracing material accumulates in areas with increased bone metabolism or blood flow, which indicates fractures, trauma, tumour or other abnormalities.

You have to drink plenty of water during the isolation period till your scan.

Whole body scan is done; once the uptake phase is complete, then the patient is positioned on an examination table. A specialised gamma-camera is used to capture the images of skeletal systems.

Patient is advised to remain in the nuclear medicine department for 2-3 hours after the injection. And the patient is advised to empty the bladder.

Radiologist will review the captured images and interpret the images and write a report. This process usually takes less than 24 hours.

A WORD FROM GDIC

In terms of price and sensitivity, a bone scan is a critical diagnostic tool.

Try not to assume the worst if your bone scan shows hot spots. Bone scans can only reveal the presence of abnormalities; they cannot reveal the  type of abnormality.

It's possible that you're in pain even though your bone scan test was normal; in this instance, speak with your doctor, who will advise you on the next course of action.
