What is MRI BRAIN + DWI?

MRI BRAIN + DWI is a procedure in which it uses specific MRI sequences and software that produces images from the resulting data that utilize the diffusion of water molecules to produce contrast in MR images.

Why done?

MRI Brain DWI is an MRI technique that helps to measure molecular diffusion in biological tissues. It is conducted to detect acute ischemic stroke and differentiation of acute stroke from other developments that occur with sudden neurologic deficits.

Procedure

In this procedure, DWI is combined with perfusion MRI, and outlines salvageable areas of ischemia and MR angiography. It provides a valuable guide for stroke management. For standard neuroimaging application, b-values up to 1000 are used. 

How does one prepare for test?

Before the test you can eat, drink and take your medications as usual. You may be instructed to observe fasting for 6-8 hours prior to test if your doctor ordered a scan for your other body parts.

After Care

If you are not given any sedative, you may resume your usual activities and normal diet immediately after the exam. However, if you have any allergic symptoms inform your doctor immediately.
