X-Ray Skull PA / Occipito Frontal View, Preparation, Procedure, and the Requirements

To get a clear postero-anterior image of the skull and demonstrate pathology such as skull fractures with medial and lateral displacement. Mandible fractures are seen in postero-anterior view. This view is used to do a reduction of the equivalent dose of the lens of the eye in paediatrics.

This View is Useful in Assessing:

* Mandible fracture

* Internal auditory meatus

* Skull fracture

* Paget disease

* Neoplastic change

* Frontal bone

* Ethmoid and frontal sinus

* Orbits

* Structure saw the dental region

* Mastoid sinus

* Greater and lesser wings of the sphenoid

Patient Preparation

* Remove the object containing Metals, such as Jewellery, Hair Clips, Watches, Rings, or any other similar object from scanning part of the body, to avoid a bright or blank spot on the diagnostic film.

* Notify the x-ray technologist if you are pregnant or if there is a chance of being pregnant

Part Positioning

* Patient is seated facing the erect Bucky so that the median sagittal plane is with the  Bucky's midline and perpendicular to it.

* Neck is flexed to bring orbito-meatal line perpendicular to Bucky,  It can be achieved by ensuring that the nose and forehead are in contact with the bucky.

Central Ray

* Central ray is directed perpendicular to the Bucky along the medial sagittal plan and at the level of Nasion.

* The Image must include the vertex superiorly and the occipital bone's base inferiorly.

Technical Factor

  • Occipito-frontal view/ PA view
  • Collimation
    • Laterally to include soft tissue
    • Superiorly soft tissue
  • Orientation
  • Portrait
  • Detector size
  • 24 cm x 30 cm
  • Exposure
  • 75 kVp
  • 8-10 mas

Image Technical Evaluation

* Ensure the image is symmetrical and free of any kind of rotation

* Evaluate the orbital margins and ensure they are similar in appearance

* The petrous ridge will overlap the orbits
